Which ventilation system suits your home?

Three main types — the choice depends on insulation level, home size and desired comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need MVHR ventilation?

Recommended with energy label B or better. In a well-insulated home, ventilation loss is the largest remaining source of heat loss — MVHR recovers 80–90% of it. Saves €450–€780/year on heating costs. In older homes (label E/F/G), improving insulation is a higher priority.

What is the difference between MVHR and mechanical extract ventilation?

MV (mechanical ventilation, system C) extracts stale air via a central unit; fresh air enters through vents. MVHR (balanced ventilation, system D) has a second fan that supplies fresh outdoor air, and a heat exchanger that recovers heat from the extracted air. MVHR = 80–90% heat recovery vs mechanical extraction = 0%.

How often should I replace filters?

MVHR filters every 3–6 months (depending on dust/pollen). G4 coarse filter: 3–6 months, F7 pollen filter: 6–12 months. An Itho HRU set costs €25–€45 per filter change. After replacement, efficiency returns to nominal and the noise level drops.

Is MVHR noisy?

Modern MVHR units run at 20–35 dB(A) on setting 2 (normal) — comparable to a whispered conversation. Setting 3 (boost) when cooking/showering: 35–45 dB(A). Duct silencers are standard with Brink and Zehnder. Itho HRU has optional silencers.

Does MVHR ventilation work with a heat pump?

Choosing ventilation in 2026

In modern, well-insulated homes, ventilation becomes the biggest energy leak. MVHR (heat recovery) is often required in new builds to meet the Dutch BENG requirements (since 2021), and in renovation it is the first energy-saving measure after insulation.
