Mobile or split air conditioner — what is the difference in efficiency?
A split air conditioner is 2–3× more efficient (SEER 7–9) than mobile (SEER 2.5–3.5). For regularly cooling one room, you recoup the extra cost of a fixed installation within 2–3 summers in electricity costs. Mobile works fine for occasional days or a rented home where drilling is not allowed.
What is the difference between R290 and R32 refrigerant?
R290 (propane) has GWP=3 (climate-friendly), no F-gas. New mobile air conditioners with a refrigerant with GWP ≥ 150 are no longer permitted from 2027; R290 complies. R32 (GWP 675) is still permitted in new split systems up to 12 kW until 2029. Both are more efficient than the older R410A (GWP 2,088, banned from 2025).
How many BTU do I need for my room?
Rule of thumb: 9,000 BTU per 25 m² for moderately insulated, 7,500 BTU/25 m² for label B+. Example: living room 35 m² label D → 12,000 BTU. Ceiling height above 2.7 m or south-facing glazing: 1 size larger.
Can an air conditioner also heat?

Split systems are installed by our F-gas certified engineers in our service area; work on the refrigerant circuit is legally reserved for certified companies.
How much electricity does an air conditioner use per summer?
Mobile 10,000 BTU, 4 hours/day, 30 summer days = ~84 kWh = €34 (€0.40/kWh). Split system, same use: 28 kWh = €11. Multi-split for a whole home: 80–140 kWh/summer = €32–€56.
