Marstek Venus E fault or not working: solutions per symptom

Part of the guide Home battery, EV charger and electric heating

Short answer: if a Marstek Venus E does not charge, does not discharge or cannot be found in the app, it is in most cases a setting or a connection, not a defect. Check in this order: is an operating mode switched on, is the P1 meter online (green in the app), is the Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and strong enough at both the battery and the meter cupboard, is the firmware up to date, and does a restart help (battery off, wait 30 seconds, on, re-pair the P1 meter). If the red warning light is on or the app shows a fault code that returns after a restart, it is a warranty matter: email info@instalpunt.nl with your order number, serial number and a photo.

First, the five basic checks

  1. Operating mode active? Without an operating mode (self-consumption, price-based control or manual), the battery does nothing, even if it is connected. Check in the Marstek app which mode is active and what the switch-on and switch-off limits are. Explanation per mode: self-consumption mode en Marstek with a dynamic energy tariff.
  2. P1 meter online? The battery is controlled by the readings of the P1 meter on your smart meter. If it is offline, the battery is 'blind' and stays idle. In the app, the P1 status should be green; on the battery itself, the CT light is on when the connection is there.
  3. Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and strong enough? Both the battery and the P1 meter only work on 2.4 GHz. The signal at the meter cupboard is just as important as at the battery.
  4. Firmware up to date? Updates fix known pairing and control problems. Check this in the app first after every fault.
  5. Restart in the right order. Battery off, wait 30 seconds, on, re-pair the P1 meter, refresh the app. This solves a surprising number of problems.

Solutions by symptom

SymptomMost likely causeWhat to do
Battery does not chargeNo operating mode, no reason to charge, or low temperatureSet an operating mode. Self-consumption only charges from surplus solar power, price-based control only during off-peak hours. Around freezing point, the battery charges in protected mode and more slowly.
Battery does not discharge during expensive hoursMinimum reserve (SOC) too high, or P1 meter offlineCheck the discharge limit in the app; restore the P1 connection. Without P1 data it stays idle.
Stops at about 10% or charges to about 95%Not a fault: protection limitsNormal behaviour that protects the service life. The limits can be adjusted within margins.
P1 meter not connecting or dropping outPlug not fully inserted in the P1 port, weak Wi-Fi at the meter cupboard, port already in useReinsert the plug; test the Wi-Fi at the meter cupboard (a metal cupboard dampens the signal); if the port is in use, use a P1 splitter; after a new Wi-Fi password, pair again.
App cannot find the batteryAccount on the wrong server region, Bluetooth or location off, too far awayCreate the account in the Europe region; switch on Bluetooth and (on Android) location permission; pair within a few metres. Find the Bluetooth ID on the label on the side.
Wi-Fi pairing failsPhone or router on 5 GHzChoose the 2.4 GHz network and connect your phone to that same network during pairing. If your router combines both bands under one name, temporarily create a separate 2.4 GHz network.
Battery keeps going offlineWeak signal in a garage, shed or metal cupboardA mesh point or repeater closer by, or a network cable in the LAN port of the Venus E 3.0 (the Mini has no LAN port). Without internet, the selected operating mode simply keeps working.
Meter still exports to the gridPower limit reachedOn a shared socket, the battery delivers a maximum of 800 W; large peaks then still go via the grid. Full power (2,500 W) requires a dedicated circuit.
Red light on or fault code in the appUnit fault, mains voltage or temperatureSee the table below. If the code returns after a restart, report it to us.

Reading the lights and fault codes

The front of the Venus E 3.0 has seven indicators: fault (red), grid socket on, backup socket on, capacity bar, CT/P1 connected, Wi-Fi connected and Bluetooth connected. The capacity bar runs from left to right while charging and from right to left while discharging. If the red fault light is off, the unit is working normally. If it is on, the app shows a code. The Marstek manual groups these codes as follows:

CodeMeaningAdvice from the manual
400, 530, 558OverheatingCheck ventilation and ambient temperature; arrange better cooling. If the code persists, report it.
401, 402, 410-430Self-test or internal deviationWait half a minute, then restart. If the code persists, report it.
405Too much load on the emergency power outputConnect fewer appliances to the backup socket.
431-434Battery side: communication, voltage or currentCheck that the mains plug is firmly connected; with 431, connect the battery to the mains within five minutes to activate it. If the code persists, report it.
440-448Grid side: voltage or frequency out of rangeUsually a fluctuation on the grid or a loose connection; check the plug and circuit and wait until the grid is back to normal.
559Temperature too lowCheck that the ambient temperature is within range. If the code persists at normal temperature, report it.
560Battery emptyConnect the mains plug so that it can recharge.
5C0-5CBBluetooth, firmware update or networkCorrect app and device? Wi-Fi stable? This often resolves itself; restart an update.

The full table is in chapter 4.2 of the Venus E 3.0 manual (PDF). If a code appears that you do not recognise, write it down exactly before restarting.

Winter, cold and heat

According to the datasheet, the Venus E 3.0 works at an ambient temperature of -20 to +55 °C and is rated IP65, so it is suitable for an unheated shed or a sheltered spot outdoors. Around freezing point, the battery protects its cells by charging more slowly, and in extreme cold code 559 may appear. That is not a defect. If you want to get the most out of the battery in winter, place it somewhere that does not drop below zero, such as a garage or utility room. Conversely, do not place it in full sun against a south-facing wall; overheating (code 400) is more common than cold. Keep the ventilation openings clear and install the unit upright.

When should you contact us?

If the basic checks do not help, a fault code returns after a restart, or you hear unusual noises or smell something, stop trying yourself. Unplug the mains plug and email info@instalpunt.nl with:

  • your order number and the battery's serial number (label on the side);
  • the fault code or a screenshot from the app, and a photo of the lights;
  • a short description: what was it doing, and what have you already tried.

The Venus E 3.0, Mini and Max come with a 10-year Marstek warranty. If you bought from Instalpunt, we are your point of contact: we assess the report, liaise with Marstek and handle the repair or replacement. You can read exactly how that works in Marstek warranty via Instalpunt. If, after all the checks, the P1 meter turns out to be the problem, a separate P1 meter CT003 (€49.99) is the quickest test; if it is covered by the warranty, we will arrange it with you.

Een eigen groep aanleggen of de meterkast aanpassen is werk voor een erkend installateur; Instalpunt installeert niet. In Zuid-Holland kunt u bijvoorbeeld terecht bij. Frequently asked questions

Why is my Marstek Venus E not charging?

Usually because no operating mode is active, because there is no surplus solar power or off-peak hour to charge from, or because the P1 meter is offline. Check those three points in the app and then restart the battery.

Mijn Marstek P1-meter heeft geen verbinding. Wat nu?

Push the plug firmly into the P1 port of the smart meter, test the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal at the meter cupboard and use a P1 splitter if another device is already connected to the port. After a new Wi-Fi password, you need to pair the meter again.

The Marstek app cannot find my battery.

Create your account in the Europe server region, switch on Bluetooth and location permission, and pair within a few metres of the battery. The Bluetooth ID is on the label on the side.

What does the red light on the Marstek Venus E mean?

The red light is the fault indicator. The app then shows a code; the most common groups are 400 (overheating), 440-448 (mains voltage) and 5C0-5CB (network). If the code returns after a restart, report it to Instalpunt.

Does a Marstek Venus E work in winter?

Yes, the specified range is -20 to +55 °C. Around freezing point it charges in protected mode and more slowly. For the best yield, place it somewhere that does not drop below zero.

How do I report a faulty Marstek battery to Instalpunt?

Email info@instalpunt.nl with your order number, serial number, the fault code or a screenshot and a short description. We assess the report and arrange the warranty handling with Marstek.
