Buying a radiator: which type, which size and what does it cost?

Short answer: for most living rooms and bedrooms a type 22 panel radiator (two panels, two convectors) is the best choice: plenty of heat in little space. Choose the height that fits under the windowsill (usually 500 or 600 mm), and the length based on the output the room needs. Planning a heat pump later? Then choose one size larger or type 33. A Radson Compact type 22 measuring 600 × 1000 mm costs € 240.95 including VAT at Instalpunt.

The right radiator in four steps

StepWhat you decideHow
1. OutputHow many watts the room needsRule of thumb per m² or m³, see calculating output
2. TypeNumber of panels and convectors (11, 21, 22, 33)More panels = more heat at the same size, but deeper. See type 11, 22 or 33
3. HeightDoes the radiator fit under the windowsill?Measure from floor to windowsill, leave 10 cm clear below and 10 cm above
4. Length and connectionWidth of the wall and where the pipes areSide connection (pipes at the side) or middle connection (pipes at the bottom in the centre). See replacing a radiator

Bathroom: towel radiator

In the bathroom you usually choose a towel radiator: it heats the room and dries your towels. Allow 100 to 120 watts per m². The DRL Lisa central heating bathroom radiator comes in white and matt black, from 763 to 1807 mm high, from € 133.95. All designer and bathroom radiators →

Valves and lockshield valve

Every radiator has a radiator valve on one side and a lockshield valve on the other. With a new radiator it makes sense to replace these at the same time: a thermostatic radiator valve (€ 24.95) with thermostatic head (€ 26.95) and a lockshield valve (€ 14.95).

What should you look out for with a heat pump?

A heat pump heats with water at 35 to 50 °C instead of 60 to 80 °C. A radiator then gives off less heat, often about half. So choose a larger size or an extra panel (type 33 instead of 22). More information: does a heat pump work with ordinary radiators?

Frequently asked questions

Which radiator is best for a living room?

Usually a type 22 panel radiator: two panels and two convectors give plenty of heat at a limited size. For a large or poorly insulated room, or if you want a heat pump, type 33 or a longer radiator is better.

What does a new radiator cost?

At Instalpunt a Radson Compact type 22 measuring 600 x 1000 mm costs € 240.95 including VAT. Type 11 radiators cost 84 to 136 euros, type 33 radiators 365 to 483 euros. A DRL Lisa central heating bathroom radiator costs 134 to 232 euros.

What is the delivery time?

Radson radiators are ordered specially for you; allow about 2 to 4 working days, plus shipping to EU countries (usually 3–5 working days).

Can I hang a radiator myself?

A handy DIYer can replace a radiator with the same size and connection, provided you can drain the system and then refill and bleed it. With a different size or connection the pipework has to be adapted; that is a job for a qualified installer.
