Which underfloor heating system fits?
The three main types differ in installation method and suitability for renovation vs new build.
| System | Installation | Suitable for | Build-up height | Price/m² |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wet system (in screed) | Embedded in cement screed | New build, floor renovation down to bare subfloor | 60–80 mm | €55–€85 |
| Dry system (water-based, thin board) | Under laminate/vinyl, no screed | Renovation, quick to complete, lightweight construction | 15–25 mm | €75–€110 |
| Milled floor | Milled into existing screed | Keep the existing concrete floor | 0 mm extra build-up height | €95–€145 |

Frequently asked questions
Underfloor heating for renovation without removing the screed?
Yes — choose a dry system (thin board or electric heating film) laid under your laminate or vinyl (15–25 mm build-up height). Or a milled-floor system where grooves are milled into the existing screed. Both avoid the costly operation of a complete floor build-up.
Does underfloor heating work with my boiler?
Yes, provided your boiler has a mixing set that lowers the flow temperature to 35–45 °C (a boiler normally runs at 70–80 °C). Modern boilers support this with a separate underfloor heating circuit.
How much output per m² do I need?
Typically 70–100 W/m² for a water-based system in a well-insulated home. Electric heating film: around 140 W/m² (only as supplementary heating, not as the main source). For a heat pump compatible design: flow temperature max. 40°C and 100 W/m² capacity.
Underfloor heating alone or combined with radiators?
For optimal heat pump efficiency: underfloor heating only on the entire ground floor. Combining it with standard high-temperature radiators is not recommended, as they need 70 °C.
When can I walk on the floor again after installation?
Wet system in screed: 21 days drying time for the screed + 5 days slow heating-up curve = 26 days to full operation. Electric heating film: ready to use as soon as the laminate is laid. Milled floor: 3 days to fill the grooves + 1 day drying time.
Which thermostat suits underfloor heating?
A thermostat with weather-compensated control (Honeywell evohome, Tado° with OpenTherm, Remeha eTwist with floor mode). For multi-zone underfloor heating: zone thermostats per room with separate control per manifold. View compatible thermostats.
Choosing underfloor heating in 2026
With the growth of heat pump installations, underfloor heating is becoming the standard heat emitter system. A low flow temperature (35–45°C) enables the highest efficiency for both boilers and (hybrid) heat pumps.
