Nefit TopLine hydroblock: which block fits your boiler and what it costs

Part of the guide Troubleshooting a boiler fault

Short answer: which hydro block you need depends on the exact TopLine series, and they differ more than the name suggests. A TopLine HR 70 has a different block from a TopLine HR 70 II, and the TopLine Compact has its own again. There are also separate flow and return blocks. Check the rating plate to see exactly which type you have and choose the matching part number below.

What is a hydro block, exactly?

The hydro block is the plastic or brass block through which the heating water enters and leaves the boiler. It usually contains the flow and return connections, often with a filter strainer, a non-return valve, the filling connection and sometimes the pressure sensor. It is not a combustion part: it sits on the water side of the boiler.

Precisely because it contains plastic, rubber seals and moving parts, it is a component that wears out after some years. Heat and limescale do the rest.

When does the hydro block need replacing?

The most common reason is a leak. You see water under or behind the boiler while the condensate drain is dry, and the heating pressure slowly drops. Plastic blocks develop hairline cracks around the union nuts after some years; at first these only leak when the boiler is hot, which makes them hard to find.

Other signs: the boiler does not hold its pressure, a filling valve that keeps running, or a clogged filter strainer in the block that reduces the flow so the boiler locks out on temperature difference. An engineer will first check whether only the strainer or a sealing ring is the problem, as that saves a whole block.

Do you have a ProLine, SmartLine or Economy instead of a TopLine? Each of those series has its own block; search for your type in the Nefit parts catalogue. We take the appliance list from Nefit's factory documentation and do not add anything to it ourselves.

Flow or return: which one do you need?

On most TopLine series these are two separate blocks. The flow block is on the side where the heated water leaves the boiler, the return block where the cooled water comes back; the return block often contains the filter strainer. If it leaks on one side, you would normally replace only that block. If the boiler is getting on for ten years old and the other side is opened up anyway, many engineers choose to do both at once, simply because the labour then only counts once.

Not sure which of the two is leaking? Dry both connections thoroughly, let the boiler run for an hour and see where the water appears first.

Replace it yourself or call an engineer?

The hydro block is on the water side, not the gas side. Even so, replacing it means removing the casing, draining the boiler and then refilling and venting it, and the seals have to sit exactly right. Most manufacturers also make their warranty conditional on fitting by a qualified installer. Our advice: by all means order the block yourself, but have it fitted by someone who can then also check the boiler and bring it up to pressure. If you smell gas or are unsure about anything inside the boiler, leave the casing closed and call a certified gas engineer.

Frequently asked questions

Hoe weet ik welke TopLine ik heb?

The rating plate on the underside or inside of the boiler casing shows the full type, for example TopLine HR 70 II or TopLine Compact HRC 25 CW4. Those additions determine which block fits; just "TopLine" is not enough to order. Take a photo of the plate and keep it for next time.

Can I repair a leaking hydro block instead of replacing it?

Sometimes the leak is in an O-ring or union seal and only that needs replacing. If the block itself is cracked, replacement is the only solution; plastic cannot be reliably sealed in a spot that constantly heats up and cools down.

Why do the prices vary so much?

Because the blocks differ technically. On the TopLine Compact the hydro block is a relatively simple connection, whereas on the HR series it is a larger block with more functions built in. That explains the difference between roughly fifty and over three hundred euros.

How long does a hydro block last?

In practice ten to fifteen years. A system that often needs topping up or contains a lot of limescale shortens that. Regular servicing, including cleaning the filter strainer, extends it.
