Replacing a boiler gas valve: costs, codes and why it is a job for a gas engineer

Part of the guide Troubleshooting a boiler fault

Short answer: a gas valve for a boiler costs € 165 to € 300 for the part, plus one to two hours of labour including a combustion check. The gas valve is the safety valve that controls how much gas reaches the burner; replacing it is strictly a job for a certified gas engineer, because the gas-air ratio must then be set with a flue gas analyser. Rule out the cheaper causes first: with an ignition fault, a worn ignition electrode is far more likely than a faulty gas valve.

What the gas valve does

The gas valve sits between the gas pipe and the burner and contains two safety valves in series plus a control unit. The control board tells it how much gas is needed; the valve meters that amount, matched to the airflow from the fan. That gas-air ratio determines whether combustion is clean. If it is wrong, the boiler burns too rich (soot, carbon monoxide) or too lean (poor ignition, cutting out).

Because it is a safety component, nothing on a gas valve can be adjusted by feel. It is set by measuring the CO and CO₂ content of the flue gases.

The codes per brand

BrandCodeMessage
Remeha3Gasklep defect
RemehaA.05.29Gasdruk onder de limiet
VaillantF.25Verkeerde gassoort of onderbreking in de kabelboom naar brander, ventilator en gasblok
AWB6Gasklep defect
BoschF9Fault in the electrical circuit of the gas valve
IntergasCFoutieve aansluiting gasblok of branderautomaat

Note the pattern: several of these codes do not point to the valve itself but to the aansturing of it. A loose plug or a damaged wiring loom gives the same fault as a defective valve, and that saves hundreds of euros.

What to rule out first

Check that there is gas at all: does the cooker still work, is the tap under the boiler open, has there been work in the street? Low gas supply pressure looks the same as a faulty valve; Intergas, for example, reports separately that the gasvoordruk te laag is.

If the boiler will not start, begin with the ignition: electrode, ionisation probe and lead are cheap and fail far more often than the gas valve. Only when those are fine and the control is correct is it the valve's turn.

What a gas valve costs

PartManufacturer numberPrice
Intergas gasblok Siemens VGU76S, vervangingsset074504€ 164,95
AWB gas valve Thermo Elegance 4-A/1 Advance0020097278€ 234,95
Intergas gasblok Kombi Kompakt, Honeywell801437€ 229,95
Vaillant gasblok compleet180930€ 298,95

All variants can be found under gasblokken en gasregeling. Note that manufacturers have changed suppliers over the years: the same boiler series can have a Honeywell or a Siemens valve, with a different part number. So the number on the old valve is what counts, not the boiler type alone.

Waarom dit echt monteurswerk is

Three reasons. First, the law: in most countries work on gas appliances is reserved for certified gas engineers. Second, sealing: every gas connection must be tested for tightness with a measurement after fitting, not with soapy water and good faith. Third, the setting: a new valve must be adjusted to the correct gas-air ratio, and that can only be done with a flue gas analyser.

Feel free to order the part yourself, as that saves the mark-up an installer adds. Have the fitting and measuring done by someone with the right qualifications and equipment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my boiler's gas valve is broken?

The boiler often reports it with a code, such as Remeha 3, AWB 6 or Bosch F9. Many of those codes, however, point to the control: a loose plug or a damaged wiring loom gives the same fault. So rule out gas pressure, ignition and wiring first. Only an engineer can confirm with measurements that the valve itself is faulty.

How often does a gas valve fail?

Rarely. It is a robust part that usually lasts as long as the boiler. If an engineer is quick to conclude "it's the gas valve", ask which measurements that is based on.

My boiler has been converted to propane. Can I use the same valve?

No, that requires a conversion kit with different injectors and settings. These are listed separately in the catalogue under conversion kits. Always state that it is for propane when ordering.

What is the total cost, including fitting?

Allow for the part plus one to two hours of labour, including the combustion check. For a boiler older than twelve years, it is wise to compare that bill with the price of a new appliance.

Can a gas valve leak dangerously?

A gas valve is designed to close when in doubt; that is why the boiler goes into lockout instead of carrying on. If you do smell gas, close the gas tap, ventilate and call your national gas emergency number or a gas engineer immediately.
